Camping Hotspot - Roses Park, Bellingen

If you’re traveling through the mid coast of New South Wales and need a place to rest, then Roses Park on the banks of the Bellingen River is the perfect spot for you. This camping spot is located in the very small town of Thora which is roughly 14km west of Bellingen and 14km east of Dorrigo on Waterfall Way. Most people pass through Coffs Harbour and head west to the Roses Park campsite which takes about an hour. While it’s certainly not a luxurious camping site, there are plenty of well-maintained facilities and activities to make the site a fun place to stop for a couple of days. With its large welcoming grassy areas and big shady trees, Roses Park camping site is a very popular overnight rest area for campers and caravanners alike.

All The Essentials

One of the reasons why this camping spot is so popular is because it’s only a gold coin donation to stay there and there are plenty of attractions to visit during your 48-hour maximum stop over. The site is well-maintained by volunteers which makes this spot even more special, and has plenty of camping tables and chairs, a fireplace, and a convenience store located a stone’s throw from the camping site which sells gas, beer, ice, and firewood (all the essentials!). While there are no showers on the camping grounds, there are two flushing toilets that are cleaned regularly and has toilet paper most of the time. As any experienced camper would know though, it’s always a smart idea to bring your own toilet paper wherever you go! You’ll be pleased to know that there are also plenty of rubbish bins conveniently located throughout the campsite.

Noise and Surrounds

The camping site is located near a road so expect a little noise from time to time, but it’s mostly quiet at night when you need to sleep. During the day, the main attraction at the camping site is the Bellinger River which borders the camp grounds and you can access the river via a stepped walkway. Most of the time, there is plenty of water in the river and it’s quite safe with slow flowing water, perfect for a hot summer’s day! If you’ve got dogs with you, they’ve absolutely love running around in the open space and going for a dip in the river (yes, the camp grounds is pet friendly, but remember to be responsible). Be careful when there’s heavy rainfall though, as the river runs very quickly and contains debris which can be very dangerous.

The Local Area

There’s also plenty of other attractions located within a short distance from the Roses Park campground. Further up the mountain, there are numerous lookouts with waterfalls and swimming holes that you can freely explore. Most of these attractions are national parks though, so there are no pets allowed unfortunately. One of the most impressive sights is Dangar Falls, which is only about half an hour’s drive from the Roses Bay camping ground. Just head west to Dorrigo and follow the signs. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed! The lookout is conveniently located right next to the car park, and a short 20-minute walk will take you to the bottom of the falls which is absolutely breathtaking. If you’re in Dorrigo, you cannot beat the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre with spectacular views and a number of hiking trails, perfect for a day out in nature.
